LO3 - Draft Article for Double Page Spread

WHO SAYS ROCK CAN'T BE FUNKY?

Baggage Belt 9 certainly don't. This local sheffield band are bursting onto the scene and combining 2 different genres to create their own sound.  Starting of playing in the singer's bedroom they're rising up the chain and are set to take the O2 by storm in June.

We sat down with the group for a cuppa, to find out what makes them tick, where they're heading and which is their local takeaway.

(New page)

"I think I'll have a sausage sandwich" says Jack, lead guitarist to the group and all around nice guy. We're sat in the Harland cafe near Brammal lane, it's a lovely sunday morning and the radio is playing oasis quietly in the background. We've all just arrived and sat down with a cup of tea, just waiting to go up and order our food.
"This is actually a bit crazy for us" vocalist Solomon says to me as he pours some sugar into his mug "I've never had an interview like this before, so I'm not quite sure how we'll do" he adds in a jokey manor. I reach into my pocket and pull out my notebook, already looking forward to hearing what these lads have to say.

LO1 - Flat plans

Cover
Contents

Double Page Spread

LO1 - House style moodboards (font, colour scheme, photography ideas)

House Style - Colour Ideas
I think that these colours will work together effectively for my magazine, because they evoke the more calmed and happy sense that indie music is trying to evoke. The colours also contrast well, and so it will be easy to distinguish different parts of the magazine from others. The lighter colours will also make it easier to have images in the foreground without anything distracting readers from them. I think the way that colours blend into one another, will allow me to place content around the page in a way that feels smooth and as though it flows. I will use a black font for my text, as it is the easiest to stand out against most colours. I will use Blues for my headers and they stand out more and will draw attention to different articles, so that readers can more easily decide what to focus on.
I will be using yellow mostly as a background colour, as it offers a warmth and friendliness to my magazine, without being to loud as to distract from the content.

LO1 - Examples of existing magazines

I am going to be making a magazine that revolves ariound local music.

Here are some examples of music magazine covers

These magazines are useful examples, because of there use of varying fonts, distinct house style, and the way that the cover lines are displayed around the main cover images.

Here are some examples of contents pages

I think that these are good examples because of their simplistic design, image to text ratio, and the way that the information is displayed.

Here are some examples of double page spreads

I like how the image to text ratio is balanced throughout these examples, I also find it interesting how some maintain their house style whilst others deviate from it.
These examples are also useful for figuring out how to position my columns and borders
The artist's don't look at the camera as much in the double page spread, because readers have already bought the magazine and so don't need to be drawn in to purchase.

LO1 - Reader Profile

This is Chris Miles, he is an 18 year old student who is currently taking his A levels and looking at universities.
He ha a part time job but doesn't earn a large amount of money, at the weekend him and his friends like to go out clubbing and to music venues. He plays guitar at a low level and has often considered joining a band, but just never followed through with it. He listens to wide range of music, but considers his favorite genre to be indie rock, and often uses Spotify to listen to this music. He is trying to earn enough money to go to music festivals in the summer with his friends, however he also wants  to spend time with his family as he will be moving away for uni soon.

He wants to go more gigs before the summer,  just so that he is more used to a music and gets to spend time with his friends.

LO1 - Mindmap of ideas

It is beneficial to plan ideas for your magazine because:
1). It means that you have more time to gather information for your articles
2). You know what house style to use for the issue that reflects the content and audience
3). It allows you to create a schedule, so that the production can be orchestrated better

LO1 - Analysis of a magazine cover

This cover of NME magazine features many conventions found in magazine covers.
The image shown is a medium close of up of a single artist and against a plain background, which is also one of the colors found in the house style of the magazine, which for this issue is light blue, red and white, this simplistic house style is effective because of it's use of complimenting/contrasting colors and how they connote a more casual and relaxed style, which suits the magazine. The color black is also used sparingly on smaller bits of text, but is mostly to show a connection to subheadings as opposed to repeater them as their own subheadings. All fonts on the page are sans-serif, this is because of the informal  more approachable effect that they give off. Most of the fonts appear italic and fluctuate between bold and not on each line, this is to separate each line from the ones next to it, it also gives off a slightly independent look, that appeals to readers of an indie rock magazine, as it fits the themes of the music genre. The main cover line in this issue, uses a font that makes it look like it's hand written, this is effective as it connotes, the personal touch of the artist which represents the article it is about. It also reinforces the idea of this magazine opposing the normal format and being made a lot more casually.

LO1 - InDesign Introduction

In todays lesson we are going to learn the features of adobe InDesign.
I will use an NME contents page to help me follow the conventions and create an example in InDesign to practise.
I have chosen this image because of it's strong variety of images and headers, it also has adverts for other products and images of covers from previous magazines.
It also carries on the use of the house style from the front cover.
The strong emphasis on quotes from the articles also shows a confidence in the articles within.

Conventions of a contents page

- Information about the different articles
-Subheadings - inside this week
-Photos to attract you to particular features of the issue
-Page Numbers, so that viewers will go to particular articles more easily
-Issue number
-Masthead, used on every page to reinforce the brand, genre and house style
-Colours, same one's used on cover page
-Columns - where information is broken up by white space

Key Terms

Dialog box - any box that offers information to the user
Desktop publishing program - a program for designing the layout of web based products
Column - where information is broken up by white space
White space - any empty space on a magazine (can be any colour)
Gutter - The space between the columns

We have filled in the features according to our magazine, the dialog box allowed us to choose specific settings for the layout of our page.

LO1 - Photoshop Introduction

LO1 - Prelim task for a college magazine

This a magazine cover I am going to Pastiche
This is my interpretation of the previous College magazine cover.

I have done this so that I can learn the functions of features of a magazine cover and how to integrate them into my own work successfully.

I got the measurements for my magazine by measuring a real life one that turned out as 21cm x 29.6cm. I then opened photoshop and created a magazine on these settings, however it proved to be too small so I scaled the size up by 10, and so have used these settings.
I set my resolution as 300 so that the quality was at a good setting.

My adapted prelim College Magazine cover.
I have learnt how to put outlines onto my text so that they will become more visible. I have learnt how to change the brightness and contrast of my image so that they are better for using. I have learnt how set text so that it is attached to an object or shape.
